Dark, indulgent chocolate brownies
Dark, indulgent chocolate brownies

After all the drama of last weeks disaster for the Weekly bake off, this week was literally a piece of cake.  The recipe from Mary Berry’s 100 Cakes and Bakes was Dark and Indulgent Chocolate and Walnut Brownies.  For once I didn’t mess about making all the components of the cake, as there was nothing I could add since my walnut tree is currently about a foot tall and not likely to bear fruit for the next decade.

I was surprised by the mixture as it was mostly liquid chocolate with the barest minimum of flour, some walnuts and yet more chocolate in the form of chips.  I didn’t have the vast quantity of plain chocolate that the recipe required and had to make up the difference with some milk chocolate so it might not be quite as dark as it should be.

On the whole there was nothing difficult about the bake and when I presented the brownies to Himself for tasting and scoring, he was delighted that not only was it a chocolate cake but there was plenty of it.  The brownies were soft and gooey in the middle and slightly crunchy on the outside with the walnuts adding a bit of texture.  Score was 9/10, it didn’t reach the dizzy heights of his all-time favourite the Ginger and Treacle Spiced Traybake but it was a step or two up from last week.
